Your guide to an unforgettable night out with Sacramento Ballet
Whether it’s your first time seeing a ballet or your hundredth, we’re thrilled to welcome you. Sacramento Ballet performances are filled with powerful dancing, beautiful music, and moments that just might take your breath away. Here’s everything you need to know to feel comfortable and confident heading into the theater.
Do I need to dress up?
Only if you want to! Some people love dressing to the nines for a night at the ballet, while others come in jeans and a cozy sweater. There’s no dress code—just wear what makes you feel good. (And maybe bring a light jacket… theaters can be chilly.)
What happens if I’m late?
Think of attending a ballet sort of like watching a movie in a movie theater – it’s totally fine to arrive late, but you might miss an important plot line. However, we totally get it – traffic happens. If you arrive after the performance has begun, our ushers will guide you to your seat at the next appropriate break in the program (which might be intermission). To make sure you catch every moment, we recommend arriving 20–30 minutes early.
Can I get a drink or snack?
Absolutely. Concessions are available before the show and during intermission. Treat yourself to a glass of wine, a sparkling soda, or a sweet treat. All of our venues allow food and beverages purchased at the concession stands in the theater.
I’ve never been to a ballet. Will I understand it?
You don’t have to know the difference between a jeté and a pirouette to enjoy a ballet. The movement, music, and atmosphere speak for themselves. That said, if you’re the curious type, your program will offer helpful notes, and we often host events like Coffee & Class where you can learn more about the art and practice of ballet for professional dancers.
Is it okay to clap during the performance?
Yes! Ballet audiences tend to be enthusiastic. If something moves you—a big lift, a beautiful solo, or a perfectly timed landing—go ahead and clap. It lets our dancers know you see their artistry and feel their energy.
Is ballet really for me?
We believe ballet is for *everyone*. Whether you’re here for the classic storytelling, or a bold new contemporary work, you’ll find something to love. Most performances are best for ages 8 and up, but Nutcracker is a magical choice for kids 5 and older.
What if I still don’t “get” it?
That’s okay! Sometimes there isn’t anything specific to “get.” Ballet is about emotion, movement, and the magic that happens when music and the human body meet onstage. Just be present, enjoy the atmosphere, and let the performance wash over you. Talk about what stood out to you afterward—everyone sees something different.
Final tips for a great visit:
– Arrive early to find parking, grab a drink, and settle in before the curtain rises.
– Turn off your phone—the dancers love your full attention.
– Stick around during intermission—it’s the perfect time to chat, snap a photo, or explore your program.
– Ask questions! Our friendly staff and volunteers are happy to help.
